I have a feature request in for this being worked out, plus having ALL preferences on the same panel. I've got a tech support ticket on this and several techs have worked with me, in case it's just OE. I find that I have to use "Open Using" more than I'd like.

On the other two, I was able to free these archive files up, so that they just displayed, but were not directly associated with TP. All machines are XP-Pro SP3 and configured almost exactly. On one setup, TP has set an association with some archive files and will not turn them loose, no matter what I do set in Windows. All I want it to do is see and create thumbs FOR these formats. These can be set manually, but when one does this, TP wants to carry that association over to being the default program. The default installation omits formats like WMV and several others. 6, or 7, but when they expanded the file associations, I began having little problems.
I have to clean any of these files out of the folder to start with. For instance, if the AVI is DivX (though I have that CODEC installed), ThumbsPlus usually hangs. The only problem that I've had with AV files were when less than "plain-vanilla" CODECs were used. Even some functions that overlap with Bridge are easier in ThumbsPlus. Always put this on a large, fast "media drive." If you have tons of images, think about doing separate Databases for different folders. Also, be warned that its Database file can grow to monster sizes quickly. It's getting better, but not perfect yet. I'd also like to see it take more advantage of "Scratch Disks," and not be such a RAM hog. Maybe the upcoming version 8 will address this issue.

I want it to be set to just DISPLAY, but not to take full association. It also wants to cease control of file types and I have to "slap its little hand" on too many occasions. Even with its file association, there is much to be desired. It'll often just display an icon, but will use the CODECs installed to play, and will display the poster-frame in the viewer. Bridge does a better job, but still not perfect. One weakness in ThumbsPlus is its handling, or lack of, AV files with different CODECs, even when they're installed on the system. Still, for batch file re-naming, and finding dupes, ThumbsPlus is my go-to app. I use Bridge (CS2) for much of my browsing in PP, PS, AI and InDesign. By default, you'll get a little blue ~, but there are about three of them above one another, between dupes.Īs for a comparison between Bridge and ThumbsPlus, they are very similar. Make sure that you turn on (think it's on by default) the "flags." Do not recall the exact syntax of that Preference. For finding dupes, its Sort>Similarity is invaluable.

I have Googled and found some software that will find duplicate file names, but nothing that will help me compare them visually. I need a tool to find the duplicates and triplicates. There are way too many for me to find by visually comparing them. Some have also been resized and/or cropped. Now I have duplicates and triplicates of many photos with 2 or 3 different file names. Sisters 2 and 3 renamed all their photos. Sister 3 has her photos plus some (but not all) of Sister 1’s and Sister 2’s Sister 2 has her photos plus some (but not all) of Sister 1’s photos Each sister wants ALL of her photos on the final slideshow. Three sisters gave me their photo CDs (over 1000 photos) to be combined to make one slideshow of their summer activities together.
